About Us

Atlas Pacific Medical is a clinic specialising in HIV and sexually transmitted disease/infection STD/STI testing. Our doctors have spent many years in this field and are experienced in dealing with the myriad of problems presented by HIV and STDs/STIs.

We can arrange all manner of STD/STI testing performed by experienced doctors, both male and female. We give expert advice on symptoms and signs you may be experiencing and we aim to get you back to health.

STD/STI and HIV are somewhat taboo areas that many prefer to ignore but there is no shame in being cautious with your health. In fact those that screen often will experience fewer long term problems.

So feel free to come and speak to our friendly and approachable doctors about any issues you may be having. Remember we still cover all the GP stuff as well.

Services Provided

HIV Screening

HIV screening is an important part of overall health screening. HIV often has no symptoms making it difficult to spot clinically. Testing is often the only way to know for sure. We cover a wide range of screening services, from finger prick, oral, blood and lab test, starting from an affordable rate of $45 for a simple test to more elaborate screening services.

HIV FAQ

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and is an infection that targets white blood cells of the body, weakening the immune system. If HIV is left untreated it progressively weakens the immune system making you more susceptible to other infections, which can be fatal. Once the immune system has weakened sufficiently, HIV then progresses to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which is the end stage of the disease.

Sadly not at this time. There are treatments available that suppress the virus and prevent it from progressing but there is no method of removing it completely from your system. There is a caveat to this where there has been a potential new infection within the last 72 hours as there is a medication known as the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) that can kill off the virus completely before it establishes itself in your body. But as mentioned this has to be started within a 72 hour window of the infection.

Very simple; the easiest way is through rapid testing that either involves a mouth swab or a finger-prick test. Both methods will yield results in 20 minutes and can conclusive as early as 1 month after a potential exposure. Laboratory testing is also available but this requires a full blood draw and can take several days to return a result.

Sexually Transmitted Disease/Infection (STD/STI) Screening

STDs/STIs are diseases passed on through sexual contact, be that vaginal, anal or oral sex. Symptoms can help to identify an infection but lack of symptoms is often misleading.

STDs can be screened through a collection of blood, urine and swab samples depending on location of a potential infection. Screening itself is largely pain-free and can be performed quickly. The only wait is approximately 1 week for the results to return from the laboratory.

It is important to note that not everyone experiences symptoms when they have an STD meaning that some may go undetected if they base their screening purely on symptoms. This is the reason why easily curable infections such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are often missed and not treated leading to ongoing infections rates worldwide. Screening tests are the only way to know if an infection is present.

STDs FAQ

STDs are Sexually Transmitted Diseases and as the name suggests they are infections that are almost exclusive to sexual intercourse. Using barrier protection such as condoms helps reduce the risk considerably but they are not 100% safe.

Symptoms will depend on the actual STD involved but the most common STDs such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea can produce a burning sensation passing urine or penile discharge in men and vaginal discharge or pain during sex for women. However, it is important to note that up to 80% of people infected with an STD have no symptoms, making them an unreliable indicator. The only way to know for sure is through screening/testing.

This also depends on the site of the potential STD but as a rule of thumb most can be screened with a urine and blood test (for men) or a blood and vaginal swab (for women). Results often take up to a week to return as the infections need to be cultured and grown at the laboratory.
